The VFW traces its roots back to 1899 when veterans of the Spanish-American War
(1898) and the Philippine Insurrection (1899-1902) founded local
organizations to secure rights and benefits for their service: Many
arrived home wounded or sick. There was no medical care or veterans'
pension for them, and they were left to care for themselves.

History:
VFW Post 2498 is named after LIEUT. MANSON H. CARTER (12 November 1923–7 May 1997). Lieut Carter served in the US Navy during WWII. Manson Carter is the great grandson of William Carter, who founded Carter Mills (the largest and most successful business in the town of Needham at that time). Manson went on to become the CEO of Carter Mills himself.
Some fun "Carter" Family Street trivia:
- There is a Carter Street, way up on the northern border of town, off Reservoir Street. It is named for knitting mill owner William Carter, who settled in Needham in the 1850s. In addition to the company, William Carter served the town in various elected offices, and was a significant benefactor – donating the public library, and land for several churches and town organizations.
- Alfreton Road, which cuts across from Webster Street to Highland Avenue, was laid out when Carter built himself a new house around 1900; it is named after the village in Derbyshire where he was born.
- Lee Street, named after his second wife Martha Lee
- Avery and Greenough Streets after the family of this third wife, Jane Greenough Avery, whose father Jonathan Avery was largely responsible for the economic development of the Heights.
- Then there is Mark Lee Road (formerly Conant Street), renamed after Carter’s brother-in-law and first business partner, Mark Lee.
- Manson Street was named in memory of Carter’s grandson, Lieut. Manson H Carter.
- Then there are the interconnected streets at the bottom of Webster Street: Frank, William, Horace, Roscoe, and John Streets. These are named for Carter’s five sons – Frank, William H., Horace, Roscoe, and John.
Manson Carter died on 7 May 1997, in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, United States, at the age of 73, and was buried in Needham Cemetery, Needham, Norfolk, Massachusetts, United States.
